Swedish handball team to the semi-finals
The high hopes of another Olympic medal for Sweden on Wednesday were dashed, as neither show-jumping Rolf-Göran Bengtsson, nor the men's 1000 m double canoe met the expectations of medals. But in a surprise turn of events, the men's handball team took Sweden to the semi-finals, by winning over the European champions Denmark, by 24-22.
With the Swedish handball-team not even qualifying for the World Championships, few had exepcted them to win over Denmark. This is the first time in twelve years that the Swedish handball team makes it to the semi-finals. On Friday, they will meet the other surprise team in the tournament, Hungary, which beat Iceland.
Rolf-Göran Bengtsson was, ahead of the Olymnpics, deemed by many as Sweden's perhaps best chance of winning gold. Therefore there was great disappointment when his horse Casall was struck off from the competition due to injury.
In the men's double canoe, Henrik Nilsson and Markus Oscarsson, were in the lead for the first three quarters of the 1 kilometre final, but they completely ran out of steam two hundred metres from the finishing line and ended in fifth place.
