Prince Carl Philip attacked outside nightclub
The Swedish prince Carl Philip was attacked outside a nightclub in the French Riviera in the early hours on Saturday, reports newspaper Dagens Nyheter.
The prince and the people in his company were attacked by a person who they say they did not know when they were leaving a night club in Cannes in the south of France. The Swedish Royal Court has not released many details on the matter, but say that the prince's condition is perfectly stable.
According to the Royal Court's head of communications Bertil Ternert, the attack was entirely unprovoked. Ternert told Dagens Nyheter he could not say whether the incident has been reported to local police in France.
The evening newspaper Aftonbladet writes that prince Carl Philip's girlfriend Sofia Hellqvist was present, and that she tried to intervene as the unknown man attacked her boyfriend.
As head of state, the Swedish king receives protection from the Swedish Security Police, Säpo. For other members of the royal family, a security escort is provided only in those circumstances that are deemed to pose a threat to them.
Säpo has not commented on whether prince Carl Philip was accompanied by security on the night of the attack.
