A couple in their 30’s have been remanded in custody on suspicion of the genital mutilation of their 3 year old daughter. According to the detention order, the violation happened sometime between January and April this year, either in Gambia or in Sweden.

Female genital mutilation has been illegal in Sweden since 1982. In 1999 the law was extended to make it punishable if the mutilation was done in another country.

The crime carries a sentence of up to four years in prison, but should there be life-threatening consequences the sentence could be as long as ten years imprisonment.

According to a report from Uppsala University last year, in the nearly 30 years since the law went into effect, there have been only 46 complaints filed in Sweden. That has led to just two convictions, both in 2006.

A 41 year old man was sentenced to two years in prison for the genital mutilation of his 12 year old daughter in Somalia. That same year a 42 year old woman received a three year sentence for genital mutilation and the gross violation of her daughter’s integrity.
