Tens of thousands of gravestones are still lying down in Swedish graveyards, as cemeteries have found it difficult to find relatives of the deceased, news agency TT reports.

The stones were pushed over by cemetery officials following an accident last year where an eight-year-old girl was crushed to death by a fallen gravestone. They pushed over any stones that were thought to be unstable, to prevent any similar accidents in the future.

Relatives of the deceased in the graves with the unsafe stones have then been asked to pay for the work needed to make the graves safe. However, in many cases the relatives have not been found, meaning the stones are still lying on the ground. While the cemeteries are responsible for safety in their grounds, the relatives are responsible for the gravestones.
