The Swedish Migration is expected a huge leap in the number of asylum seekers here – and says it needs more than US$1 billion more to deal with the situation.

According to the newspaper Sydsvenskan, the board estimates 2013 will see 41,000 applications for asylum in Sweden, a 40 percent jump compared to last year. To handle the load, the agency says it will need an additional US$1.2 billion over the next four years.

This year has seen a significant increase in refugees coming from Somalia, Afghanistan, Syria, Serbia and Bosnia compared to last year. There’s also a record number of unaccompanied minors arriving and applying for asylum.
