Half of the rental bikes put out by Örebro city council for residents to use have been stolen, according to Swedish Radio's local station in the town.

Over one hundred purple bicycles were spread around the city for residents to use to get around, but during the summer around 50 of them have gone missing.

Cyclists have been able to borrow the cycles free-of-charge, identifying themselves by filling in a form, meaning they have been difficult to trace.

Council official, Eric Poignant told Swedish Radio that they may have to to introduce some kind of electronic identification scheme, to make tracking easier.
