Thousands of passengers have been stranded in Stockholm and Uppsala since early morning following a power failure. Express trains to the capital’s Arlanda airport have also stood still all day.

The service resumed at 7 pm on Monday evening.

The power failure - caused by a short circuit between Stockholm and Uppsala –  meant that only one track was operation instead of four for most of the day. On Monday evening three out of four tracks were in use.

“This kind of fault is not normal and we will investigate if it’s a design problem or caused by a lack of maintainance,” said Ola Nilsson, at the national transport administration.

A second power failure had also stopped commuter trains running south of Märsta, north of Stockholm, on the Uppsala route. The second outage may not be resolved until Tuesday morning.
