The telecom company Telia Sonera has backed down on a plan to charge for mobile Internet telephone services such as Skype which compete with the company’s own phone services.

Instead customers will pay increased charges for using mobile Internet services, reports news agency TT.

“We received signals from our customers that they wanted to use IP (Internet Protocol) telephony and so that will be included [in a package of services],” said Ulrika Steg, head of the company’s mobile services.

Traditional telephone services still represent about 80 percent of the company’s profits although Internet services are rapidly increasing.
