Alva Snis Sigtryggsson has won the Environmental Hero of the Year Award for her work to save the Ojnare forest from limestone mining on the Baltic island of Gotland.

The company Nordkalk had planned to open a limestone quarry in the Ojnare forest adjacent to an EU designated Nature 2000 protected area.

This summer and fall, Sigtrygsson, from the Nature and Youth Sweden association, organized a successful camp protest together with 150 other activists against the company's plans.

The World Wildlife Foundation and the internet site miniplanet.se nominate the environmental hero of the year award. Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf will give Sigtrygsson the prize on 18 October.
