Thousands hit by power cuts near Stockholm
More than 5,000 households on the island of Värmdö outside Stockholm, and in Uppsala north of the capital, were without electricity from the early morning on Christmas Day, news agency TT reports. Around 2,000 customers were still without power in the afternoon, but public energy company Vattenfall expected electricity to return by 9 P.M. Tuesday.
"We have called in all the resources we can to fix the problem, but we cannot estimate when we will be done," said Magnus Kryssare, press spokesperson at the public electricity company Vattenfall.
He believes heavy snow weighing down tree branches and strong winds caused electricity cables to break.
