King Carl Gustaf focused on the environment in his traditional Christmas speech on Tuesday, news agency TT reports.

The Swedish head of state, who has mostly ceremonial functions, noted that more people must spring "to action in environmental issues," adding that "Sweden will continue to have an important role to play" in this area.

Carl Gustaf thanked those who congratulated the royal family on the birth of Princess Estelle in February, and said he and the Queen are looking forward to the next royal marriage, between Princess Madeilene and her fiancé Christopher O'Neill, in June 2013.
