First fall in christmas shopping in 17 years

For the first time in 17 years, Christmas shopping set no new record.

Figures from the HUI research institute say that retail sales sank by 0.4 percent in December 2012, compared with the same month in 2011.

Reasons why include the surge in layoffs in the autumn, plus December of 2012 having fewer shopping days than in 2011.
