Teacher shortage may close primary schools
Hundreds of primary schools around the country may be threatened with closure, according to the Swedish local authority association, SKL.
In the past the closures were blamed on depopulation and that is still part of the problem, says Mats Söderberg, a researcher at SKL's education department. But at the end of this year all new teachers in Sweden have to be qualified in order to correct primary school exams and that is leading to a severe shortage of qualified teachers.
