Minister wants origin labels for processed meat

Published lördag 16 mars 2013 kl 16.02

Agricultural Minister Eskil Erlandsson wants to label processed meat by its origin. In an interview with Swedish Radio, Erlandsson says he wants the EU to propose common regulations for how to do so in the wake of many food companies detecting horsemeat in products such as beef lasagne.

"I meet many consumers who really want to know if a sausage is from Denmark, or if it is from Skåne in southern Sweden. There is also an interest among producers to inform customers of product origins," Erlandsson says.

The Centre Party minister has previously said labeling origins of the various ingredients of a processed product would be difficult, but now thinks EU regulations could pave the way.
