Forsmark nuclear power plant loses power
A reactor at the Forsmark reactor north of Uppsala lost power Thursday night, an incident that the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority has classified as a category 1 event, the most serious on the scale. But authorities say the general public was never in any danger. Now the Authority will have to give its approval before the reactor can be turned back on.
Workers at the Forsmark plant were forced to manually turn on the reserve power to the reactor after the main power source failed.
Klas Idehaag, a nuclear inspector, says the error is serious because it shows a lack of routines for dealing with power outages.
"This is serious because the facility wasn't built for this. We had to manually start it up to use the backup power," Idehaag tells Swedish Radio news.
