Hundreds of hectares burned in Norrbotten

Published söndag 2 juni 2013 kl 12.00

The emergency services have been strapped in Sweden's northernmost county of Norrbotten, as some 30 forest and grass fires raged this weekend, most of them due to lightning that started Friday.

The biggest fires were in Pajala, where 200 hectares went up in flames. At the Slakka nature reserve in Jokkmokk, 40 hectares caught fire. Both areas are being monitored on Sunday, according to the online version of the newspaper Norrbottens-Kuriren.

There have been fires in Överkalix, Boden, Harads, Jokkmokk and Pajala. To fight some of them, rescue services relied on helicopters carrying water bombs. Rain has helped as well.
