Wennemo pushed from Social Welfare study
Irene Wennemo has resigned as the head of the secretariat for the state-commissioned study into the future of the Swedish social welfare system, after criticism from the center-right government.
She says the state secretary for the Minister for Social Security called her to say that the job is not compatible with her nomination as a candidate for president of the Social Democratic Women’s organization.
The call prompted her resignation, but Wennemo disagrees: “Being nominated to head a women’s political organization is not relevant grounds for removal,” she told Swedish Radio News.
She says she had already discussed the situation with the chairman of the study, conservative Moderate Gunnar Axén, who she said thought there was no reason for her to leave until such time as she actually took over the women’s organization.
