Defence lawyer Tomas Nilsson says he will appeal the genocide conviction

A 54-year old man was found guilty Thursday of genocide.

The Stockholm District Court sentenced Swedish citizen Stanislas Mbanenande to life imprisonment for participating in massacres of tens of thousands of people in Rwanda in 1994.

The man’s lawyer says he will be appealing the sentence.

The accused is suspected of having led gangs of killers in western Rwanda, and according to witnesses he shot into groups of people.

The genocide in Rwanda claimed an estimated 800,000 lives. This was the first trial ever in Sweden for genocide.
