Court supports TV licence fee for computer owners

Published måndag 24 juni 2013 kl 11.07

Several court rulings issued Monday say that anyone who owns a computer will need to pay a TV licence fee to finance public-service broadcasters in Sweden.

According to Luleå's administrative court, so many people watch TV over the internet that a computer should be considered a TV receiver, meaning anyone who owns a computer must pay the annual licence fee of around 2,000 SEK.

The court said that the definition of what a TV receiver is should remain "technologically neutral" as consumer habits change, news agency TT reports.

The rulings can be appealed to the Administrative Court of Appeals.
