Heavy rain has caused flooding in several areas of Kalmar County in the south of Sweden, reports Swedish Radio news.

A shopping center on the island of Öland was evacuated as water seeped into the building and parts of a main thoroughfare in Kalmar were closed as water flooded out of street drains.

Emergency personnel were responding to pleas for help from homes and businesses that were flooded. Authorities are asking homeowners to try to get hold of their own pumps to dry out flooded homes.

The E22 highway outside of Kalmar was also underwater in several areas.

The heavy rain has even meant the cancellation of a derby match between Timmernabben and Mönsterås. The football pitch is to wet to be played on.

The Swedish Meteorological Institute has issued a Class 1 warning for up to 35 millimeters of precipitation in some areas into Thursday morning.
