A prominent member of the right-wing Sweden Democrat Party has defended the controversial website Avpixlat, telling Radio Sweden it "is not racist."

"Avpixlat is not racist and it is needed," says Richard Jomshof, an MP responsible for the Sweden Democrats' education policies.

"Most of the time they write good things. Sure, I don't like their tone sometimes and I think they could approach things in a different way, but I think Avpixlat is needed because many journalists won’t cover certain stories," Jomshof adds.

Jomshof’s comments come after revelations by tabloid Aftonbladet that another Sweden Democrat MP, Kent Ekeroth, is deeply involved in the anti-immigrant website Avpixlat, contrary to his own earlier claims.

Ekeroth seems to have a managerial role in the running of the site, according to emails unveiled by Aftonbladet.

Emails from Ekeroth to the editorial team at Avpixlat contain editorial advice and instructions. In one email he wrote: "Come on now - make the page more interesting and alive. The page looks really dead right now."

Aftonbladet also reported that Ekeroth used his private bank-transfer account to channel donations for Avpixlat.

When confronted by the newspaper, Ekeroth said he has "very good relations" with the editorial team at Avpixlat but that he does not work with them.
