After a strong performance on Thursday night, Sweden lost 83-87 to home favourites France in the quarter-finals of the European Basketball Championsips.

With just minutes left in the fourth period, the match was all square, but France’s Céline Dumerc stepped up, scoring a three-pointer. The French team then held on to the lead to the end.

For the Swedes, the match was an historic event – it was the national team's first quarter-final spot since 1987.

“They have put Swedish basketball on the map,” Swedish Radio sports expert Nina Baresso said of the team after the match.

The arena was packed, with 5,000 spectators cheering the teams on.

The Swedish team will face Belarus on Friday afternoon in a World Championship qualifier.
