In Stockholm Gibraltar denied Euro rugby spot
At a meeting of the European Rugby Association (FIRA-AER) here in Stockholm Saturday, Spain successfully blocked the attempt by the Gibraltar Rugby Football Union (GRFU) to join the organization.
Gibraltar’s rugby players were trying to follow their soccer counterparts, who were accepted by the European football governing body UEFA in May, over Spanish objections.
But GFRU General Secretary Chad Thomson told the Reuters news agency that his organization had failed to win the necessary two-thirds majority “despite meeting all criteria for membership”.
“Rugby lost and politics won today”, he told Reuters.
Spain ceded Gibraltar to Britain in 1713, but still claims sovereignty over over “The Rock”.
