Several people were knifed Sunday morning in downtown Varberg, in the southwestern province of Halland. The police tell the TT news agency hat several shots were also fired.

The TT news agency says it has a film taken by a witness from a nearby apartment, which shows the police firing five shots at the suspect, who is waving a knife.

The first two shots appear to be warning shots, TT says, and when the man refuses to obey a shouted order to stop, two more shots are fired and he falls to the ground. The fifth shot from the police came when the man tried to get up off the ground.

TT says that when the man then refused to drop his knife, the police clubbed him with batons and their fists to get him to let go.

At least three people have been reported with knife injuries, and have been taken to Varberg Hospital.

The suspect has also been taken to the hospital. The hospital has issued a press release saying that a young man with a gunshot wound is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

The police say that as far as they know there is no connection between the attacker and his victims.
