Major Snowstorm Blankets Sweden

Published måndag 14 februari 2005 kl 12.43

A major snowstorm caused a string of accidents, left two people dead and around 14 thousand people still without power in Sweden as of Monday, after as much as 45 centimeters of snow fell from late Saturday on.

At least 50 people were reported injured in accidents caused by the weather, and main airports in affected regions, including Stockholm, Malmö and Gothenberg, were operating with slight delays.

Copenhagen’s international airport was closed through the weekend, as was much ferry traffic, although some service has resumed.

Some of those who lost power during the weekend were the same people who went without power for days or weeks after last month’s hurricane in southern Sweden.  Officials say that while some will get their power back by Monday evening, it may take days to complete all the repair work necessary.
