Police have said criminal acts cannot be ruled out in the case of the five-year-old girl who was found dead on Monday in Avesta, central Sweden, Swedish Television reports.

"The forensic examination begins tomorrow. We'll have an answer within a few days," police spokesperson Bo Ericsson tells the channel.

Police have asked local residents to contact them if they saw or heard anything between the girl's disappearance on Sunday and the retrieval of her body on Monday.
