Despite two penalties for Sweden in the second half, the hosts did not manage to win against Denmark in the opening game of the Uefa Women's European Championships Wednesday evening.

The match ended 1-1, after both star striker Lotta Schelin as well as forward Kosovare Asllani missed their penalties.

The other game of the evening, between Italy and Finland, ended goalless.

Expectations of Sweden coach Pia Sundhage's team were very high prior to the game.

"Anything but a semi-final would be a fiasco," wrote sports columnist Johan Esk in the Dagens Nyheter newspaper.

The next challenge awaiting the Swedish women's team is Finland, on Saturday.
