Man killed in Portugal as parachute fails to open

Published fredag 12 juli 2013 kl 21.00

A Swedish man died in a parachute accident in Portugal on Friday, several media outlets report.

The accident happened in Nazaré, north of Lisbon. The man reportedly jumped from a 100-metre high cliff on the beach, but his parachute failed to open.

"Something went wrong during the jump. We are trying to find out whether it was a fault in counting or if there was something wrong with the equipment," local police spokesman Lorenzo Gorricha told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet.

The man's relatives and the Swedish Foreign Ministry have been informed about the accident.
