A Sweden Democrat politician who, along with two party colleagues, was caught on video using racist and sexist language and wielding a metal bar plans to run in the European Union elections, news site Nyheter24 reports.

Christian Westling stepped down as deputy board member in the Sweden Democrat Party's Stockholm section after tabloid Expressen published the video in 2012.

Westling told news agency TT: "I have always been interested in the EU issue and want to take this opportunity to get involved - if they party wants me, that is."

Westling did not want to say whether he believes the scandal last year will affect his chances of success in the EU elections.

"It is hard to say. It remains to be seen," he said.
