Police officer attacked in Stureplan

Published lördag 20 juli 2013 kl 13.02

A police officer was stabbed in the back in central Stockholm early on Friday morning. The police patrol was packing up after a nigh on duty, when a man lunged at an officer and stabbed him. A press spokesman says that the officer was saved by his protective vest, which stopped almost all of the knife blade.

The man then attacked another officer, and was arrested, suspected of attempted murder.

Police do not know why the man suddenly attacked. "The police had noticed him during the night, but he had not acted in a threatening way, or had any contact with them before", says police spokesman Sven-Erik Olsson, to Swedish Television News.

The attack happened in Stureplan, a busy part of the city, and a centre for Stockholm's elite nightlife.
