A 25-year old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for the kidnap and manslaughter of a jeweller. The shopkeeper and his wife were held captive in their home on the wealthy central Stockholm island of Reimersholme.

The court decided to convict the man for manslaughter since the jeweller was killed in a struggle after attacking the robber with a knife, when the criminal was already leaving the house.

Swedish Radio News reports that the rise in violent robberies against shops selling gold has hurt the profession, and made many scared of selling gold jewellery.

Per Greijer is the head of security at the industry association for Swedish retail. He says he has talked to many jewellers who have considered shutting up shop because of a fear of being robbed.

Last year 54 jewellers were robbed in Sweden, five times as many as in 2004.
