Swedish Sportsmen Want Better Medical Checks to Save Lives

Published torsdag 24 februari 2005 kl 12.55

The National Swedish Sports Federation is calling for more rigorous medical checks on the hearts of young athletes – following the recent deaths of several more young sportman who collapsed unexpectedly during practice or competetions.

Statistics show that 50 young Swedes have died like this in the last 7 years.

The chock of young and seemingly healthy sportsmen dieing with little or no warning has shaken colleagues and Swedish sports physicians taken by suprise.

The aim is to intensify the screening so that youngsters with hidden heart disorders do not get involved in over-strenuous sports activity.
