Swedish Television Mistakenly Announces Pope’s death

Published fredag 4 mars 2005 kl 12.25

Swedish public television made an embarassing mistake on Thursday when it published an obituary for Pope John Paul II on its website for five hours before it was taken down.

A spokeswoman for SVT said it was a very ”unfortunate mistake.” An SVT employee had been working on the pope’s obituary in advance when they mistakenly hit a button that posted the text on the website.

Under a picture of the ailing pontiff in an audience with the Swedish King and Queen, the website stated ”Pope John Paul has died.”
