Tight security for murder trial of young girl
A Swedish court on Wednesday began hearing the case of a man and woman charged with the murder of an 8-year-old girl who died while in the couple's custody.
Prosecutors allege the girl was the victim of neglect and abuse that ultimately led to her death and, despite repeated warnings, authorities in Karlskrona, southern Sweden, failed to react until it was too late.
The security surrounding the trial is tight. Everyone entering the district court had to go through a metal detector and all bags were searched by guards.
In late April, the girl was admitted to hospital in Karlskrona where she was pronounced dead. She came alone to Sweden last year as an immigrant from Gaza though her parents remain abroad.
A man and a woman, aged 32 and 31, were arrested for the crime though both deny the charges of murder, neglect and aggravated assault. The man was her legal guardian at the time of her death.
