One dead, nine seriously hurt in tourist bus crash
A tourist bus taking Swedes to a Christmas market in Copenhagen overturned on a motorway in western Sweden early on Thursday, killing one female passenger and seriously injuring nine others.
News agency TT reports that the driver may have taken seriously ill, and that is what could have caused the accident.
The bus drove onto the wrong side of the road and wound up overturned in a deep ditch. The owner of the bus company told TT that they do not know for sure yet why the bus crashed, but because of the information they have about the bus swaying and going onto the wrong side of the road, they suspect it might be because the driver got sick. The driver is now being treated for life-threatening injuries.
Emergency services worked for almost two hours to free all of the passengers on board but as the morning developed it became clear that there could be multiple casualties. Shortly after 11 o'clock the police confirmed that one person had died from her injuries in hospital in Borås. The deceased was a woman aged 45. Nine of those injured in hospital are in a critical condition.
The accident took place at 7:28 a.m. on a stretch of motorway south of Tranemo. The bus had picked up passengers of various ages from stops at Ulricehamn, Borås, Tranemo and Grimsås as part of a chartered day trip to visit a Christmas market in Denmark.
