Alleged people-smuggling ringleader arrested in Germany

Published torsdag 4 december 2014 kl 17.44

An alleged people smuggler who had been reported to the police by some hundred families, including many in Sweden, was arrested in Germany on Tuesday, reports news agency TT.

He is suspected of being accessory to the disappearance this summer of 244 refugees who were on a little fishing boat, which may have sank after departing Libya.

Last month, TT reported that at least 17 people with Eritrean backgrounds in Sweden had reported the man, because their relatives had disappeared.

Italian police describe the man as the leader of a smuggling ring and arrested nine people last month. The ring is suspected of being behind at least 20 dangerous boat journeys over the Mediterranean, and their activities are said to be rooted in Eritrea, branching out into North Africa, Italy and other places in Europe.
