It seems that Arthur, the stray dog who made international headlines after following a Swedish adventure racing team for hundreds of kilometers during their competition in Ecuador, may have had an owner after all.

Vicente Quiñónez told the Ecuadorian news website, Elcomercio.com, that he had taken care of the dog for eight years, and that "Barbuncho" had been a loyal companion, following him to and from work.

Quiñónez wants compensation so that he can buy a new dog who will keep him company at home, reports news agency TT.

The captain of the Swedish adventure team, Mikael Lindnord, tells newspaper Expressen that he does not regret taking the dog to Sweden, where it is in quarantine now.

"I've chipped Arthur, and I'm his master," he says. "If we hadn't taken care of Arthur he would have died quite soon. I can't believe how anyone can claim he was someone's dog when he was so badly treated."
