The main backer of the Social Democrat party wants them to ditch their Green allies.

In an interview with newspaper Dagens Nyheter the leader of the blue-collar trade union federation LO says he would rather see the Social Democrats form a government with some of the centre-right parties, such as the Centre Party or the Liberals.

"Sweden is in a dangerous situation, and if we're not seen as a politically stable country any more we risk investment and jobs," says general secretary Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson.

Leaders of the Centre and Liberal parties have previously rejected any idea of co-operation with the Social Democrats.
