A woman in Sweden who fled war-torn Syria with her cat in a boat to Sicily is to be reunited with her long lost pet which got entangled in red-tape in quarantine.

The woman continued her journey from Italy to Sweden alone while her cat Mela was stuck in quarantine and she could not afford to pay for its release. However, following a whip-round, animal welfare in the county of Värmland, where the woman is settled, say they will pay for the cat's release.

The animal welfare association, Hope for Homeless got involved in the case after hearing of the woman's plight and looked into the question of how to help the woman reunited with Mela.

"You really feel empathy with her, thinking that when she fled for her Life, at the same time she also saved her cat," said Minna Lindberg, president of the association, to the online newspaper Nya Wermlandstidningen.

The animal Welfare group Westra Värmland Arvika has now stepped in to pay the sum needed (1,500 euro) so Mela can make the journey home. No doubt she has used up one of her nine lives.
