Thousands of illegal weapons and 36 tonnes of ammunition were turned in to the police during last year's weapons amnesty, according to figures from the Swedish National Police Board.

The initiative in 2013 allowed anyone in Sweden to turn illegal firearms into the police with no questions asked. The high number of weapons surprised the authorities, as it had only been six years since the previous amnesty.
