Wallström joins condemnation of Saudi blogger flogging

Published lördag 10 januari 2015 kl 10.44

Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström has joined the international voices condemning Saudi Arabia’s public flogging of a blogger. Raef Badawi received the first 50 of 1000 lashes Friday, and is expected to have 20 weekly whipping sessions altogether.

In addition he has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for what his supporters say was criticism of clerics and Saudi Arabia’s religious police, for their severe enforcement of Sharia law.

Writing in her Twitter account Friday, Margot Wallström said “Blogger Raef Badawi was flogged today in Saudi Arabia. This cruel attempt to silence modern forms of expression has to be stopped”.

Among those expressing similar sentiments were the United States, Amnesty Interntional, and Reporters Without Borders.
