Foreign Minister Margot Wallström says she will use her leverage to urge Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to restart peace talks with Israel when he visits Sweden in February, Swedish Radio News reports.

Sweden made world headlines when the government recognised Palestine as a state soon after the centre-left won the general election.

Wallström hopes to get through to the Palestinian president when he visits Sweden on February 10th and says Sweden will insist that Palestine abstains from further acts of violence

"We have their ear now and this formal visit is a good time to put forward our views and our recommendations," Wallström tells Swedish Radio correspondent Inger Arenander.

Wallström met with her American counterpart John Kerry yesterday to discuss the situation in Israel and offered him Sweden's support if the US were to urge Palestine and Israel to restart their peace talks.
