A gym in Luleå, northern Sweden has come up with a novel way of helping locals clear their streets and driveways during winter: snow-shoveling workouts.

The gym encouraged members of the public to get in touch if they want help shoveling snow in their neighbourhoods, local newspaper Norrbottens-Kuriren reported.

“We will gather a bunch of our strongest members to come help you for free,” the gym wrote on its Facebook page, adding that those who want to take part in a snow-clearing workout should bring “a shovel and/or a snowplow”.

The campaign took place Saturday when temperatures dropped to minus five degrees Celsius in Luleå. At around 10 a.m. the gym’s Facebook post had been shared over 100 times and had attracted nearly 50 comments. “There are 200 square metres of snow to clear around here,” one person apparently wrote.

On Saturday, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) issued a severe weather warning for large parts of Sweden as up to three decimetres of snow was expected to fall during a weekend blizzard.
