Swedish golfing legend Annika Sörenstam is one of the first women to ever be granted membership in the prestigious Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews, Scotland, news agency AP reports.

In what was described as "an historic day for the club" by R&A captain George MacGregor, seven women were given membership. It had previously been a men-only club for 260 years.

Sörenstam is a 10-time major champion. The other six admitted to the club included the British Princess Anne and other golfers from the UK, US and France.
