Swedish director Sanna Lenken has won a Crystal Bear Prize at the Berlin Film Festival for her debut film “My Skinny Sister”. The film took the award in the Generation KPlus category.

In its motivation the jury says “The film’s unique perspective, stunning performances and challenging theme really touched our hearts.” “My Skinny Sister” is a family drama about two sisters, one of whom has an eating disorder.

On Friday another Crystal Bear went to Swedish director Beata Gårdeler for her second feature film “Flocking”.

The film, about a teenaged girl shunned by her local community after she accuses a classmate of rape, took the prize in the Generation 14Plus section. The Youth Jury says about “Flocking”:

“The film which struck us the most was one which succeeds in continuously maintaining its oppressive atmosphere. This film gives us a precise and intense experience of the mechanisms of progressive social exclusion, triggered by an accusation. It excels in its portrayal of the role of social networks, where anonymity can lead to the unchecked build-up of aggression. A great cast, gripping dialog and unexpected developments combine to create an extraordinary work.”

Commenting on the award, Beata Gårdeler tells the TT news agency:

“It’s important to investigate contemporary social issues and after the showings in Berlin there have been many who have come to me to talk about their own experiences. Our story is no unique occurrence.”
