Favourites Samir and Viktor failed to qualify directly to the final in last night's Melodifestival heats, with the two tickets to the final in Friends Arena in March instead going to Melodifestival veteran Magnus Carlsson and newcomer Mariette.

Samir and Viktor, one famous via the controversial Paradise Hotel tv-show, the other a fashion blogger, were not knocked out completely though, they have one more chance to get to the final, via the "second chance" round in a few weeks. They will be joined there by the other "lucky loser" Linus Svenning.

Magnus Carlsson made his Melodifestival debut as part of the dance band Barbados in 2000. He has since competed seven times in the contest, but not since 2007.

Mariette is best known to tv audiences in Sweden thanks to her participation in the Idol talent show. Her Melodifestival entry, "Don't stop believing" was written by pop star Miss Li.

The winner of Melodifestivalen, Sweden's most popular TV show, gets to represent Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest, this year in Vienna, Austria.
