A hotel in Västerås, west of Stockholm, denied a gay couple a hotel room because of renovation work, but when one of the men tried to book again, pretending to be straight, the booking was confirmed, Swedish Radio News reports.

When Mikael tried to book a room for him and his boyfriend Johan at the Elite Stadshotell in Västerås, the hotel staff told them that the spa was being renovated and that they had to cancel their booking. But when Mikael called back to book a room for him and his pretend girlfriend "Evelina", the staff did not mention any renovations and the booking was confirmed.

The couple has reported the incident with the Swedish Equality Ombudsman.

The hotel manager, Cem Gürler, denies that it had anything to do with the fact that they were gay, and says that if anything, "they are guilty of providing bad service".
