Swedish Green Party politician Angel Villaverde from Sundsvall has been taken into custody in Peru. According to local media, he was detained on arrival at Lima airport while on a Christmas visit to see his sick mother.

The politician originally comes from Peru, and in an interview he has described how he was labelled as a terrorist after working to improve the lot of the poor in Peruvian mountain villages. SVT Nyheter Västernorrland reports that before travelling to Peru, Villaverde had received assurances from Peruvian lawyers that he could enter the country without trouble.

This is his first trip back to his homeland since he left 20 years ago.

The Swedish Embassy in Chile, which is also responsible for Peru, is investigating, Gabriel Wernstedt of the Swedish Foreign Minister tells news agency TT.
