The Peruvian police have arrested a Swedish Green party politician because of suspicion of “terrorism” offenses, the AFP news agency reports.

A source tells AFP that 52 year old Angel Villaverde was detained at Lima airport on December 26 “because he is wanted by a Lima criminal court for a crime of terrorism”.

Villverde is a city councilor in Sundsvall in northern Sweden and according to Green Party colleagues was visiting his homeland for the first time in 20 years to see his sick mother. He left Peru as a refugee in 1995 during a period of attacks by the Sendero Luminoso Maoist guerillas.

He had received assurances from Peruvian lawyers before leaving Sweden that he could return to the country without trouble.

The Peruvian police source told AFP that Villaverde is being held in cells at the Palace of Justice in Lima and would go before a judge in the coming days.
