A fire raged through a downtown apartment building in the western town of Arivka early Friday prompting the evacuation of some 40 residents.

The apartment block caught fire after flames that started on a balcony spread to the building's attic and roof. Rescue crews have issued a warning to the public to stay indoors because of the heavy smoke from the flames.

So far, no injuries have been reported and the exact cause of the fire is unclear.

Resident Leif Skoog, who lives on the third floor of the building, told news agency TT that he awoke at 4 am to fire trucks outside his window.

"We thought it probably was not so serious at first. But then water started pouring down and then I went out," Skoog said.

Firefighters are reportedly still battling the flames but have kept the blaze from spreading to neighboring buildings.
